Each Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Widow's Oil Pantry is open for anyone who is in need of food. The address is 2257 Shelton Drive, Bailey CO 80421. No appointments are necessary. The pantry is operated on a walk-in basis. On your 1st visit you will be asked to complete a short form the primary purpose of which is to inform the pantry's suppliers about where the food is going. On each subsequent visit you only need to sign-in.
The name of this ministry is derived from 1 Kings 17:7-16 and 2 Kings 4:1-7, two similar stories in which Elijah and Elisha respectively demonstrated that when God leads us to do something, He provides the resources to enable that work to be done. Our responsibility as believers is to remain faithful in doing what He has led us to do.
With the help of COMPA ministries and other food sources in the Denver CO metropolitan area the Harris Park Food Bank first opened its doors to local residents in 2007. Subsequently the name was changed to Widow's Oil Pantry. The pantry now has access to more food items through the 9Cares/Colorado Shares program, and the newest source: Food Bank of the Rockies. In 2010 WOP has been providing food to about 417 recipients per month, or 5,000 recipients per year. The ministry serves mountain-area residents in both Park and Jefferson Counties.
WOP operates under the non-profit [501(c)(3)] umbrella of Harris Park Bible Church. The pantry is operated semi-independently by a staff of volunteers. These loyal volunteers put in many hours weekly looking for new ideas and ways to procure food for the needs of the community. With an increase of hungry people has come an increase in demand for this ministry. As the saying goes, "Hunger takes no holidays." Even though WOP is run by a volunteer staff, the pantry is in need of funds for normal operating expenses. Donations are eagerly welcomed, gratefully acknowledged, and responsibly applied to the pantry's ministry. All funds raised by Widow's Oil Pantry are dedicated exclusively to this program.
